Pekka & Teija Isorättyä
We were
born as neighbors in a small town called Tornio, in the
Lapland of Finland. We have played together since we were
four years old. We studied Art and Art Education at Aalto
University, in Helsinki. In 2006 we were married and ran
away with the Mexican gypsy-punk band Polka Madre. Since
then we have worked on the contemporary art field with
sculptures, kinetic art, music and performances.
In our art we research tricks in which to create human
movement in interpretive and conceptual ways. Examples
include our walking grandmother robots (Invalid Robots),
pork skin marionette dancers (Chicharronas), and the
skeleton army (Maquina de Huesos). We have worked with
bones; pork skin; fiberglass; projections; videos; wood;
lace; car parts; motors; switchers; cranks; strings;
bicyckle wheels, etc.. For us material has a great
importance in carrying the message of the art piece and
reflecting the relationship between the real and unreal.
In addition to this, the constant opportunity to learn new
techniques gives us the possibility for perspective
thinking.
There is also a certain humor in our art and it is easy
to approach; this has given us many new friends. Sometimes
our work spaces have begun to resemble forums in which
distinct people gather. We try to capture people
interaction with our current project by inviting them to
participate someway in the creation process and Organize
the dynamics between interaction and action. A successful
art piece for us is an adventurous journey.
